On Aug. 27, 2020, 16-year-old Fernando Martinez was shot in the 400 block of Smith Street near Lions Field baseball complex. Our news partners at KWTX report that Martinez was taken to Baylor Scott & White Medical Center in Temple in critical condition. Unfortunately Martinez succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at Baylor Scott & White McLane Children’s Medical Center in Temple by Bell County Justice of the Peace G.W. Ivey.

Police say eye witnesses saw a white Chevrolet sedan speed off after the shooting. Allegedly the shooting was the result of a dispute between the teenagers, states the Killeen Daily Herald.

On the evening of the shooting, an investigation by the Belton Police Criminal Investigations Division led to the arrest of a 16-year-old Temple male. The teenager was located by Orion Drive and East Cedar Lane south of High Point Elementary School after evading police in a vehicle.

The 16-year-old male suspect's name has not been released due to his age. The suspect was taken to the Bell County Juvenile Detention Center in Killeen.

The investigation is ongoing, and we will update this story as more details become available.
