Our family would have a high end Thanksgiving meal come November. Fine China, Lace Table Cloth, Fancy Chrystal looking drinking glasses. We would dress up in our finest clean clothes. And when it was over, the men would do nothing, and the women would clean-up. Then one year, we had pizza.

It was the women's idea, because they were fed up with cleaning up all left-overs and dishes. So we wore our best dirty clothes and ate pizza off paper plates. I liked it, except I kind of missed the side dishes that I enjoyed. Scalloped Corn, and Scalloped Potatoes. It just didn't seem like Thanksgiving without those two things.

Here are some of the best side dishes that can make your Thanksgiving Dinner extra special in the memory of the kids.

  • Scalloped Corn

    No Cob Area

The key to the scalped corn is the crusty top. You have to have a little of the crusty corn to offset the creaminess of the corn underneath.

  • Scalloped Potatoes

    Say Cheese

Others enjoyed the potatoes and gravy, but I would always choose the cheesy scalloped potato dish over the mashed.

  • Mashed Potatoes

Dear Lord Don't Forget the Gravy

This dish was good, as long as there was gravy. And if your Aunt burnt the gravy, then you best hope someone made scalloped potatoes, otherwise Thanksgiving was ruined.

  • Cornbread Dressing

    Good Innards

I was never a real fan of dressing until I had a Thanksgiving Dinner while in the Army at Ft. Jackson. The cooks made a cornbread dressing. It was so good that I actually wrote home about it. Turns out I insulted my Grandma in the process. Sorry. But, the next time I was home for Thanksgiving, Grandma made the dressing with cornbread.

  • Sweet Potato

    Looks like Pumpkin

Sweet potatoes were never a favorite of mine, but others love them. I always thought it looked too much like pumpkin. If given a choice I'll choose pumpkin every time. I eat pumpkin for dessert, so I could never eat something that looked like pumpkin right next to the turkey.
