Spending time outdoors with your family is good for you. I mean, we all know that, right? Any opportunity to get out there and make memories with your kids is welcome, and Copperas Cove Parks & Rec have a great event lined up to help you do just that.

Your family's invited out to 'Fishing in the Park' at City Park Pond, 1206 West Avenue B, from 9AM to 11AM Saturday, February 13.

It's a free event for all ages. They ask that you bring your own fishing gear, but Copperas Cove Parks & Rec will be providing bait. However, you're more than welcome to bring your own bait if you want. If you've got a special bait recipe that's been passed down from generation to generation, heap it into a coffee can and come on out!

There a few rules you'll need to know about first. All Texas Parks and Wildlife regulations will apply during this event, so participants age 18 and over will need to have a fishing license. There's also a 5 trout limit.

Be sure to wear your mask so you can help keep other families safe when physical distancing isn't possible.

Some of my best childhood memories are of fishing with friends and family. In fact, I participated in one of legendary angler Charlie Pack's kids fishing events when I was in the sixth grade, and it was one of the greatest days of my life. A day spent outdoors fishing with people you love can have a great positive impact on a kid.

By the way, did you know there are ways you can fish without a license in Texas?

Texas' Free Fishing Day falls on the first Saturday of June each year. Everyone in the Lone Star State, regardless of age, is welcome to fish without a license. The idea is to allow people the opportunity to perhaps experience fishing for the first time or share that experience with others. We'll be sure to remind you when the next Free Fishing Day is coming up.

You're also welcome to fish without a license at any of Texas' 70+ state parks. You'll still need to pay an entry fee for the park, but after that you can enjoy a day of angling and relaxation. There are still some state fishing regulations you'll need to be aware of though, so be sure to check out this link for more information.

Finally, it is of course ok to fish without a license on private property if it's your land or you have the landowner's permission.
