Central Texas students have been in and out of school, and some believe that a longer school day may be the best solution for ensuring student's success.

According to Killeen ISD's meeting board, Tuesday March 9, the school board will consider a proposal to extend the current school day by 30 minutes for the remainder of the 2020-2021 school year.

Killeen ISD's board agenda states:

"The Killeen Independent School District was closed for a total of ten instructional days due to inclement weather and boil water notices during the month of February 2021. Due to the length of the closure, it was recommended at the last Board Meeting on February 23, 2021, that the district look at the feasibility of adding 30 minutes to the instructional day to help close the academic gaps due to missed instruction."

With the additional 30 minutes added to the school day comes a variety of questions and obstacles.

  • Will teachers be paid for the additional 30 minutes of work?
  • How will the changes affect school bus routes?
  • How will the changes affect extra-curricular activities?

Currently there are two options that have been suggested in how to appropriately add 30 minutes to the school day.

Option A: Add 15 minutes to start time and end time for all elementary campuses. Secondary campuses would start 15 minutes later (due to transportation) which would add 30 minutes to the end of day.

Option B: Add 30 minutes to the end day for all elementary and secondary campuses.

The meeting will take place in the Board Room of the Administration Building located at 200 North W.S. Young Drive Killeen, TX 76543. The meeting will also be streamed live at www.killeenisd.org/livetv and on KISD TV Channel 17.
