Texas Governor Greg Abbott has announced that Texas public students will return to campuses this fall.

The Gov. informed lawmakers and school officials of the decision today.

The Texas Tribune's Aliyya Swaby reports that Texas' top education officials are in agreement with Gov. Abbot's decision, and the TEA is expected to release guidelines to school districts on Tuesday.

Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath told the Tribune he believes it will be safe for students, teachers, and staff to return to school this fall, but there are plans for remote learning options for families who choose to keep children home.

However, the TEA would like to see as many students as possible return to campuses. Speaking to a TV station in Lubbock, TEA's Frank Ward said there will be higher safety standards in place than when students started school in 2019.

However, students will be not be required to wear masks or be tested for COVID-10 symptoms, according Ward

With COVID-19 spiking in Central Texas, this seems a little soon to me.  Hopefully the virus will flatten or go down before classes start back up.

What do you think? Should this decision be made now, or should officials take a wait and see approach?
